Chihuahua Temperament
The Chihuahua, often misspelled Chiwawa, is well known as a great companion dog. They are seen as courageous, extremely lively, and proud. Chihuahuas not only gives, it also demands affection. Chihuahua's are often strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. It can be suspicious of people except for its owner at times. They are intelligent, learn quickly, and respond well to proper, gentle (positive reinforcement) training. They are on of the longest living breeds and often retain a puppy-like playful attitude throughout most of there life.
Because of its size, the Chihuahua must resort to his keen hearing, alertness and sharp teeth for self defense. Altho we do not recommended the Chihuahua breed for children under 10 years of age, if you start with a young puppy and spent time socializing and obedience training they do well with small children that have been trained how to care for a small pet's needs. Be sure to socialize your Chihuahua as a pup to avoid excessive aggressiveness with other dogs as well as reserve with strangers. Altho socializing can be done at any age, for best results socializing is done while the pups are in their early development stage between 2-10 months. Chihuahuas generally recognize and are very friendly with their own breed, but sometimes disapprove of other breeds. If well socialized, the Chihuahua can be very loving and accepting of other dog breeds, other animals and small children. A Chihuahua puppy that has been well socialized will be a wonderful family addition to any household and will be great with children. Calm, even tempered Chihuahuas are what most people look for when looking for the perfect puppy to add to their family. Here at Happy Trail Chihuahuas our main focus is breeding for good temperament and socializing to produce the perfect companion dogs and family pets.
The Chihuahua is known to be a very confident dog and will make a wonderful companion dog for a family or an individual. You must remember that because of its small size, the Chihuahua is best for adults or older children that will respect the needs of a smaller dog. They are protectors by nature, making excellent watch dogs sounding the alarm (the mighty Chihuahua bark) and have terrier-like qualities. They don't think of themselves as small and show no fear to perceived threats five times their size. They simply think they are much bigger than they really are, therefor Chi owners must help them not bight off more than they can chew. If they feel you are threatened they will intervene with loud barking and an aggressive posture, no matter the size of the threat.
Little Chihuahua puppies are lively, courageous and intelligent. They are also very loyal and are known to become very attached to their owners. This tiny breed is more than protective of its owners, they crave affection and attention too. They may seem very small in size but in their mind they are big dogs with a big personality to match!
