Happy Trail's Bess

Bess has a very even and gentle temperament. She craves attention, loves to be picked up and sit in your lap while getting her head rub. She is quiet except when a stranger or other dogs come to close to her pups. Then she turns into a very loud barking machine. She enjoys long walks, exploring new places, tug of war with her soft toys and learning new tricks to get food treats. Her first litter (12/26/11), she had 4 males and 1 female. Her second litter was about a week premature; 2 females and 1 male. The small female was the only one that survive. She became super protective of her last pup, "Freckles", towards all our other Chis. We had to keep a close vigil to stop her from fighting when other Chis enter the room. She would start a fight with the larger Chihuahuas and would get injured. After Freckles was about 5 weeks old she calmed down and would let the other dogs play with Freckles.

When 2 female Chihuahuas are about to give birth at about the same time they suddenly become very leery of each other. They will approach each other cautiously with hair raised, become protective of their space and growl at each other at feeding time. This starts about a month before they deliver and continues until the pups are 5-6 weeks old. We often will put different litters together for play when 6-8 weeks old. Sometimes either mom will allow any pup to nurse showing no favoritism. The tension dissipates between the mothers by 8 weeks after giving birth, the pack is peaceful again and our home is alive with puppies exploring and playing.
